Interview to the actor, model and porn actor: Theo Ford
How would you describe your childhood?
I have the most amazing mum. She dedicated her life and energy to making my life as happy as possible. I grew up in Ireland and was brought up in a Quaker school. That gave me a great respect of equality. “The light of god shines equally in each and every one” is the main idea through which I was educated as a child. My dad on the other hand wasn’t ready to have kids and I know for a fact he didn’t want to have any. I tried most of my life to make him proud… In vain. I cannot wait to have my own kids with my husband to be honest. My parents divorced when I was a kid and I had to grow up very quickly to take care of myself and my younger sister. I am very independent because of my upbringing and a bit of a loner too.
What did you study?
I started studying international relations in Dublin. My step dad is in politics and I have always loved history and politics. I realized after a while that my path was in something more creative. I have loved art since I was a child. At 19 I left Ireland and came to Paris to study fashion design in one of the best schools in the city. I discovered fashion through art and established myself in that industry in design and PR.
At what age did you realize that being an actor and model was your future?
I always loved performing. Even as a child I use to put up shows for my family. But sadly my shyness got the best of me. When I moved to Paris I decided to go back to my artistic side and got into modelling. When I turned 25 I started porn.
How did your family react?
They are all very supportive of my life choices. I am so lucky to be surrounded by loving people. You need to accept your lifestyle yourself before expecting others to. I found out that my happiness would lead to others around me to be happy too.
Is anyone else a model or actor in your family?
No one in my family has chosen such a path. In a way it’s nice to be the only crazy artistic guy in this big family. It gives me unique stories to tell to my family.
How did you get into acting and modelling?
While in school I answered a casting call for a movie. I got the part and on set one of the girls was a booking agent for an agency in Paris. Everything in my life has been one event leading up to another. I’m always looking forward to the next adventure.
How would you react at the opportunity to act on TV?
I think we need to show than being a porn star doesn’t define who you are as a person. So I would be excited at the idea to act on TV. Having a mainstream visibility is essential in any artistic medium for a lasting career.
How did you prepare yourself to be a porn performer?
There is no way to “prepare” your self for porn. It is a continuous learning experience, which I love (and hate sometimes). You never have all the answers and every shoot is different. You need to make sure you have a certain sexual confidence and that you’re ready to expose yourself in that way. The most difficult thing for me is to have silly and sometimes mean things written about me and the ones I love. Sure I am far from perfect but , who is? I simply try and do my job as well as possible. Sadly with exposure comes jealousy and negative comments. It is very easy for people and blogs to write a ridiculous article about you hiding behind their computer screens in a little dark room. But it takes courage and hard work to show up on set fully prepared and always be available to your fans. Sure porn isn’t a torture but it can be a lot to handle some days. You need to have your head screwed on the right way and have an unbreakable determination.
Are you gay or you just see gay porn as a job?
Both. I am gay and I am happily married to a wonderful man, Shawn. Of course porn is a real job. It just isn’t a typical work place and it takes more time and effort to make it in this industry than having a regular 9 to 5 job. Sometimes I wish I had gone down an easier path but I would have regretted not being myself. I don’t do regrets and I am always myself. So I guess Porn is a part of me and always will be. I am so happy and blessed to have worked with some amazing people and I never would have met my husband if I hadn’t been travelling for porn and met him in Los Angeles.
How did you accept your homosexuality?
My sexuality has always been something very natural to me. I never felt I had to hide it or be ashamed of it. Which is strange since I never had a gay figure growing up but deep down I knew there was nothing wrong with being gay. I never came out to my parents. Simply introduced them to my first boyfriend. I never saw a straight guy having to come out to his parents for being straight, so why should I?
In porn you have to be naked, was it difficult for you at the beginning?
Being naked is the most natural thing you can do. I love being naked. I would walk around naked everyday if the police didn’t stop me!!!
Having sex on camera on the other end isn’t as easy. I was so stressed I was at the opposite side of the sexually excited spectrum… Thankfully I continued and now I am thrilled to go on set and meet new actors and crews.
How would you describe the life of a porn star?
Everyday of my life is an adventure. A new city, country, continent. A new movie, photoshoot, interview. My job takes up a lot of my time. I am a workaholic for sure but I have new priorities now being married and wanting to start a family.
There isn’t anything typical in my life. I love having new and challenging experiences. That’s how you grow as a person.
In your opinion what is the difference of sex on camera and making love to your husband?
One is filmed and the other isn’t… No seriously with my husband there is a real connection in everything we do. It goes beyond the fact that he is incredibly sexy, of course that helps too. Sex on camera is for show. Porn IS NOT real. It is a fantasy that we act out in a very unnatural way. Rarely have I “made love” on camera. Once was for FALCON STUDIOS and one was for ICON MALE. I love Nica from ICON MALE. She wants to shoot real sex with real feelings. I feel very close to her vision of porn. She is a sensitive person, as I am. We understand and respect each other.
If you could change one thing about your personal or professional life today, what would it be?
I wouldn’t change anything in my life because when I want to get something done I do it. I am very determined. The only thing I am truly missing is time. I feel like 24 hours in a day isn’t enough to get all the things I want to get done and see the people I want to see. I can honestly say I am happy in my life right now. I am getting all I ever wanted. Why would I want to change the happiest time in my life?
How would you describe your personality?
I am rather stubborn. When I have my mind set on an idea I do not let go. I am very determined, which is very important in any artistic job. You must be strong and have a great vision of where you would like to go. I would never have gotten where I am today if I let people tell me what I could or couldn’t do. I was bullied when I started porn by a nasty “journalist” from the French magazine TÊTU. This guy told me I would never succeed in porn and that I would never achieve anything in this industry. It was such a horrible attitude towards a young performer to have. Isn’t the role of the media to help out performers starting out?? I am so sad to see such attitude from someone who is paid to write about you. Making money being a nasty creature…. I guess he feels happy about it. I wouldn’t be able to look at myself in the mirror if I were him!
What upsets you?
Stupidity, small mindedness, and mean spirit. Those are so common in the world. I spend a lot of time and energy to not surround myself with that kind of energy. I am rarely upset unless your words are as intelligent as your mean spirit. Thankfully most mean people have not been blessed with the ability to be smart.
I get upset when I am far from my husband. It is a tough job to do as I am always travelling. I want to settle down a bit and enjoy life with him.
What makes you cry?
Nothing makes me cry unless someone close to me passes on. I am not afraid of death but the thought of not seeing someone I love is the saddest thing I can imagine.
What do you like to read?
The first book that moved me was PERFUME by Suskind. This novel is an incredible book which depicts how a smell can lead you into madness. I love fragrances and it is a strong memory stimuli.
My own favorite is MEMOIRS OF HADRIEN by Marguerite Yourcenar. She writes in such a magic and nearly intoxicating way. I am I love with her style of writing. She transports you into her stories and makes you feel emotions you had never imagined feeling.
What does Theo ford believe in?
The power of positivity and hard work. You must also believe in yourself and thrive for your goals. You must be your number one fan to reach your dreams!!
Right now cleaning up after my two puppies, Céline and Chloé take up most of my free time. But I love to go horse riding and swimming. I love to walk everywhere.
